  1. When I analyzed my plate it was difficult to have a valid analysis because I was not able to match my food to the possible choices.
    I know there are other sites that will allow you to analyze you actual meal. Any one know where?

  3. I enjoyed learning about the gluten-free diets. I have friends and family members that should be gluten-free and have not gone gluten-free because it is difficult for them. However, I saw today that there are lots of choices for them. I looked at the analyze my plate website today as well. I like the website for younger students. However, for high school students I think it might be too simplistic. Many of my students are athletes and there is not an option to adjust what they need as athletes versus a "normal" diet. Also, there are not a lot of choices for the students to pick. Many of my students do not eat veggie pizza or even cheese pizza if they eat pizza. It would be nice to have more choices.

  4. I tried several of my recent meals and realized that I am not eating very well at all, even though I thought I was. Apparently I am lacking vegetables in all my meals. The My Plate site says veggies should be eaten even for breakfast. Ewww! I would never even think of doing that!

  5. I put in a "summer meal", burgers, salad, pototoes, dressin. I am lacking veggies & fruit. I will need to add them maybe to salad, maybe bake some apples on the grill as well. Calories were pretty good for a meal, 850 calories.

  6. I am lacking in my fruit and veggies (as if you could not tell that looking at my body shape ;-) )

    I also feel that they under counted calories. Based on my usual food prep, my calorie count would be higher than what was given.

  8. I was o.k. with my evaluation of a summer typical dinner, except I usually eat baked potatoes instead of mashed. My variety of foods is o.k. I just have issues with portion control. My portion sizes I know are larger than theirs, so my caloric intake would be greater that what the program showed. I realize I need to change portion sizes for health, but I still have an issue eating a steak the size of a deck of cards.

  9. My breakfast plate consists of eggs, waffle, blueberries and green peppers. my drink was cranberry because I don't like milk. Analysis said is needed some dairy products to balance my plate. so I would add some cheese or yogurt to make a better plate.

  10. Before today I had not heard of the food plate. Personally, I think the food plate is easier and more simplistic since it is a representative for each particular meal of the day.

    As for the analyze my food activity, I tried several of my recent meals and in each one I was lacking in fruits and veggies, which is not surprising. I liked how each food was broken down into fats, calories, etc. but the one drawback would have to be the lack of choices.

  11. I liked the analyze my plate activity. I liked how it kept a tabulation of calories, fat, etc. It would definitely use this in middle school health because it is easy to understand. Even though some of the food choices are lacking, I would tell the students that this is what is available in their kitchen to choose from. Your home does not contain everything that is in a supermarket, so these are your choices for meals.
    The activity definitely shows the need to get fruits and vegetables in your diet and in every meal!

  12. I enjoyed the information and activites this morning. I have a nephew with a severe peanut allergy, so the the information about allergies was very interesting.
    I likes the analyze my plate activity and would use this in the 7th grade life science. I like what Lori said above as far as the choices go, I think I would give the students a calorie limit and then have them decide the foods and see who could come up with the best plates.

    I had not heard that much about gluten free diets before so that was interesting. Sounds like it is a little easier than it was in the past to use this food plan.

  13. I feel this activity is great as an eye opener for the students to get a general idea of they diet. I think would be nice to have the kids log in every thing they eat for a week and see how they fair as an average. It would also be fun to see how the school lunch program fairs on what they offer compared to what the kids eat. This is a nice easy program. Darwin

  15. Here is what I found at about.com for "What can yeast eat?"

    Yeast eats sugar, glucose to be specific. If there is no glucose around but there are other sugars, starches or alcohols, yeast creates machines (enzymes) to convert these into glucose. The yeast carries information in its DNA for dozens of machines specific to many food sources.

    Flour has a lot of starch in it, which is made of long chains of sugar molecules. Flour carries its own enzymes that work on the starches and chop them into simple sugars. This happens after the flour has been rehydrated with water or other liquids. Then the yeast uses the sugars for energy.

  17. Sally I thought your cake was great. Today I thought the vitamin C activity went really well. I do a similar thing with sulphur compounds found in dried foods.
    The bread activity was also a good activity. I plan on trying this in my chem classes. It was interesting tasting the differents types that had different textures and flavors. Darwin

  19. I thought it was interesting how changing foods helps you to make healthier choices. It gives you the fat and fruit/veggies amount, so you can adjust your diet. I think that they should try to figure out a way to incorporate the steps of the old pyramid to show exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle.

Our high school is finishing the project this summer so we should have a complete high school curriculum for PS, Biology and Chemistry posted when school begins.   25. It was very interesting to learn about gluten free and the various foods that contain gluten (MANY). I was familiar with gluten but not very knowledgeable about it. Thanks for all the usefull information Cathy.
    My plate was fun to play around with. The couple times that I filled my plate, I noticed that I need more dairy in my diet. I used to not like milk and now I can drink some milk. I don't like cheese or yogurt. I used to take calcium pills but stopped. I also noticed that all my vegetables were primarily the same color. I know now that I need to eat more varieties of fruits and vegetables. I will use the website with my students when we discuss nutrition and such.

  26. I'm sorry I needed to leave you all so suddenly. I was enjoying the class and the interaction. I enjoyed the 'leavening agent' activity lab and hope to use it in my Nutrition and Wellness class.

    I have used mypyramid.gov quite a bit in the past. I am not sure I like the change to 'MyPlate'. I find it much more limiting. A tool I have also for diet analysis is Fitday.com. There is a free version that allows you to customize food as well as keep a journal. You must be 18 or 'role play' age 18 to use it.

    I personally have increased my consumption of vegetables in the past year, along with significantly lowering carbohydrates in the form of grains. Those that I do consumer are high in fiber. With this change I have experienced significant, easy weight loss and better health.

    So, might it be the grains or increased vegetables so that caloric intake is down? It is an exciting time in the study of nutrition and food science.
