Miles Koppang, Ph.D. is a professor of chemistry at the University of South Dakota. He received a BA with majors in math and chemistry from Mayville State College. He was a high school math and physics teacher following graduation for one year. He received a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of North Dakota. He was a post doctoral fellow at the Center for Bioanalytical research at Kansas University. He has been at the University of South Dakota since 1986 and begins his 26th year of teaching and research at the University. His research interests are in the area of electrochemistry, particular, the development of new

analytical methods for bioanalysis based on electrochemistry. He has supervised numerous graduate and undergraduates over the years. He has also been active in outreach, having

developed the Not So Late Night Chemistry with USD program in the late 80’s and 90’s. The program brought teachers and their chemistry students to the department foran evening of pizza and hands – on work with departmental instrumentation. He served as chair of the department for six years from 1996 through 2001. His outreach now focuses on secondary science teachers whose teaching assignments are in different areas than primary area of expertise.

Barb Goodman, Ph.D. is a Professor of Physiology in the USD Sanford School of Medicine. She received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University (majoring in chemistry) and her Ph.D.

from the University of Minnesota. Her research focused on lung physiology for most of her academic career. Recently, her research interests have shifted to physiology education. Dr.

Goodman is presently associate editor of the journal, Advances in Physiology Education. Since 2001, she has been director of the South Dakota BRIN program. This Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network works to enhance biomedical education and research throughout South Dakota through a variety of mechanisms and to ultimately increase the level

of competitiveness for South Dakota in medical research. The BRIN program is funded by the National Institutes of Health. The program supports a variety of research students each year including undergraduate and high school students working in the labs of various faculty associated with the BRIN program. It also connects faculty from institutes of higher education throughout the state including both public and private colleges and universities. Dr. Goodman has been very active in outreach and works with middle school and high school students and teachers throughout the region and state.

Cathy Mariotti Ezrailson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Science Education at the University of South Dakota, teaching physical science and science methods. Graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. from Ashland University and a master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction: Science Education from the University of Houston, she obtained her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction: Physics Education from Texas A&M University. She was a Research Scientist and taught at Texas A&M University in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture winning the 2005 Dissertation of the Year Award for EMIT: Explicit Modeling of Interactive-Engagement Techniques for Physics Graduate Teaching Assistants and the Impact on Instruction and Student Performance. She has taught physics, geology and computer science in public schools and junior colleges for over 20 years, winning a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 2000 and a RadioShack/Tandy Technology Scholar Award in 1999. She has been a Physics Teaching Resource Agent since 1992 and has developed science curriculum materials through research in the areas of science safety and using web-based technology skills to teach science, receiving two grants from the South Dakota Board of Regents in 2008 and 2009. She has been the Managing Editor of ThePhysicsFront, K-12 digital library collection Physics and Astronomy in ComPADRE, a National Science Digital Library Pathways Project for over five years, and Giving web seminars on a variety of science topics sponsored by the National Science Digital Library.

Elizabeth Freeburg is a faculty member of the USD Sanford School of Medicine and the USD School of Health Sciences. Her responsibilities include instruction in Anatomy and Physiology

and to help design and implement the new health sciences major. She graduated with a Bachelor's of Science from the University of Notre Dame in 2002 after majoring in Science-

Education. In 2003, she earned a Master's in Educational Administration while teaching 6th and 7th grade science and reading at Dakota Valley Middle School in North Sioux City through the Professional Development Center Program. In 2004, she began work on a PhD in Basic Biomedical Sciences and joining the laboratory of Dr. Carlos Telleria where she investigated the compound, Mifepristone, on human ovarian cancer cell growth. In December of 2008, she received her Ph.D. and then served as a teaching Postdoctoral Fellow the direction of Dr. Barbara Goodman in the USD School of Medicine and earned a Specialist in Educational

Tina Keller, Ph.D., is Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and Director of Physics. She has been at USD for twenty years, during which time she has taught a variety of

courses including introductory physics & astronomy, upper-division physics courses, summer courses for high school teachers, and honors seminars, and in the spring of 2006, was therecipient of the Belbas-Larson Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her research interests started in condensed matter physics and physics education, but more recently have turned to nuclear and high energy physics in connection with South Dakota's efforts to convert the Homestake mine into a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. She also serves as the U.’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

Paul Kuhlman, Master Teacher, Avon School District. Paul is a physical science teacher at Avon High School. He has taught algebra, geometry, statistics, physics, chemistry, forensics

and physical science at Avon. Notably missing from that list is biology despite the fact that Paulreceived his undergraduate degree majoring in biology education at North Dakota State

University. His first two teaching jobs, in Waubay and later Hosmer, SD, required that he teach all the junior high and high school science courses. With his experience teaching chemistry and physics and his new found interest in teaching those subjects, Paul was able to find a teachingjob in a district (Avon) that has two science teachers instead of one science teacher on its staff. Recently, Paul received the Masters of Natural Science (2005) through the University of South Dakota. He had earlier earned a Masters in Administration from USD but his love for the classroom has kept him teaching. He is very active in using hands-on methods for teaching and has a long history of supervising students in science fairs. In 2006, Paul received the John E. Bauman, Jr. American Chemical Society’s Midwest Region Award for Excellence in High School

Chemistry Teaching. In 2008, Paul was selected South Dakota teacher of the Year.

Kris DeWitt is serving as assessment director/coordinator of the summer short courses. Kris is Associate Professor of Chemistry at Mount Marty College, Yankton, SD. Dr. Dewitt served in a variety of capacities as a chemical officer in the United States Army for more than 20 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from South Dakota State University, her masters in chemistry from Kansas State University and her Doctorate in Education from the

University of South Dakota. Her dissertation and ongoing research interests are in the area of assessment. She served as a co-PI and assessment director for the National Science

Foundation grant, Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center, a five year multi-million dollar grant to support undergraduate research at the University of South Dakota and eight additional regional colleges and universities in the region including Mount Marty College.
